Pharmacy Technician Position Purpose:

Under direct supervision of a registered Pharmacist, performs those duties deemed acceptable by the State Board of Pharmacy to include compounds medication, coordinates continuation or discontinuation of services, processes refill prescriptions and documents in the patients’ records, communicates with patients about supply and deliveries of medications, processes refill prescriptions and documents in the patients’ records. This position assists in the preparation of I.V. medications and supplies for clients and maintains a clean and organized pharmacy.

What You Will Do:

  • Maintains all related prescription and compounding logs, delivery manifests and any other related files as determined by the Pharmacy Manager/Pharmacist in charge.

  • Cleans the pharmacy, compounding area and warehouse per policy and procedure.

  • Maintains any pharmacy related equipment and documents appropriately.

  • Performs any related aseptic validation testing procedures and maintains a record of those results. Maintains the quality control logs/notebook.

  • Performs daily temperature checks on refrigerators, freezer and drug storage areas and documents appropriately.

  • Assists with biohazard waste disposal in accordance with EPA, OSHA and state guidelines.

  • Assists with the orientation and training of pharmacy personnel.

  • Participates in branch quality assurance program.

  • Participates in on-call rotation.

  • Participates in pharmacy team meetings.

  • Communicates concerns, questions and complaints or problems reported from patients/caregivers to appropriate supervisor.

  • Participates in Performance Improvement (PI) Program Coordination; including assisting with the overall development and implementation of the PI plan, assisting in the identification of goals and related patient outcomes, participation and reporting of activities and outcomes, development and implementation of corrective plans.

  • Cleans and calibrates IV pumps and poles and compounding equipment per manufacturer’s guidelines and policy and procedures.

  • All other duties as assigned.

  • Accurately prepares and assembles patient specific supplies for delivery to client. Assembles ancillary supply prepackaging as directed.

  • Assists with retrieval and documentation of lab results as needed for patient assessment.

  • Programs or double checks IV pump settings for accuracy prior to delivery.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school graduate or equivalent

  • Pharmacy Technician meets requirements for licensure/certification in the state of Iowa. In states without licensure/certification requirements, obtains certification within six months of employment.

  • IV compounding experience.

  • Excellent customer service skills. Excellent math skills.

  • Excellent communication skills, flexibility, and ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team.

  • Self-directed with excellent time management skills and ability to work independently.

  • Working knowledge of medical technology. Ability to function well as part of team.

  • Availability for full-time, regular day time hours and ability to work some on-call hours.

  • Two years Pharmacy Technician experience preferred.
