Description:

Endoscopy Nursing Skills

• Wound prevention and care

• Pressure ulcer

• Arterial and Venous stasis ulcer

• Surgical wounds

• Initiates IV Therapy as per policy/procedure, taking into consideration vein condition, patient age, skin condition, patient positioning, and cognition

• Monitors and maintains venous access

• Demonstrates care and maintenance of central venous access devices

• Demonstrates ability to perform 12 lead EKG’s

• Capillary Blood Glucose Monitoring (CBGM)/Quality Control

• Provides respiratory support. (Pulse ox, suctioning, wall and portable oxygen therapy)

• Interprets cardiac rhythms and responds appropriately

• Communicates with members of the healthcare team regarding patient’s cardiac rhythm/status

• Assists patient and physician during procedures

• Follows procedural standards (SGNA)

• Sets up equipment used and changes appropriately

• Replaces and restocks procedure cart

• Phlebotomy skills

• Blood culture, T&C specimens, etc.

• Central venous access device

• Peripheral specimen collection

• Labeling of specimens

Endoscopy Equipment Use

• APC machine

• Electrocautey /ERBE

• Scope drying cabinet

• Pyxis access and weekly inventory

• OER scope washer

• Olympus toner and scope guide

• Accu check machine

• EMR documentation

• Crash cart checks and maintenance if applicable to unit

• IV Infusion pumps

• Oxygen and suction shut off valves

• Cardiac monitors:

  • Admits/discharges/transfers patient information

  • Customizes/edits/reviews patient alarms/information

  • Set up for invasive monitoring

  • Changes screen view

  • Hemodynamic and cardiac output calculations

  • Trouble shoots poor waveforms and equipment problems

  • Notifies supervisor/biomedical of equipment failure/problem
