Description:

Position Purpose:

Responsible for the coordination and supervision of patient care within the hospital and provides direct and indirect care as needed. Provides leadership and direct supervision of nursing personnel and serves as administration representative for the evening, night, weekend and holiday shifts with responsibility for total health center operations, if the Clinical Leader is not in-house. (Nursing and non-nursing departments). Assists the Clinical Leader and/or Chief Nursing Officer in evaluating the overall operations of the department. Is responsible for providing patient care as needed on the day and night shift. Assists in Labor and Delivery as needed. Leads the discharge planning process for patients in Observation, Acute Inpatient or Skilled levels of care. Will receive information and assist in the intake process for skilled level of care patients. Will assist in collection and monitoring of quality measures for the unit.

What You Will Do:

  • Supervises and coordinates patient care on the unit and ensures that optimal level of performance/standards of care are achieved.

  • Responsible for coordination of post-hospitalization care related to discharge or transfer of the patient.

  • Assists in the intake process for skilled level of care patients.

  • Assists perioperative staff when the perioperative census deems necessary.

  • Assesses staffing needs for the upcoming shifts and communicates and/or makes the needed staffing adjustments by contacting staff to work extra, if needed OR designating staff on low census or low census on-call when necessary.

  • Delegates/supervises appropriately based on patient needs and the scope of practice.

  • Serves as a mentor for staff by promoting critical thinking in the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of the patient's plan of care.

  • Collaborates with Clinical Leader to evaluate nursing staff performance and unit operations. Develops a work environment that fosters and celebrates excellence in service.

  • Identifies and strives to achieve customer needs and expectations while promoting quality improvement initiatives.

  • Develops and maintains a collaborative manner of communication with staff, physicians, patients/families and multidisciplinary caregivers.

  • Documents patient information in the electronic/paper medical record in an accurate, timely manner.

  • Provides competent patient care to the above-indicated patient populations by obtaining and appropriately interpreting data, making appropriate decisions based on demonstrated knowledge of age-specific growth and development, and appropriately adapting procedures and treatments.

Hours:

Fulltime/ Monday - Friday / Weekends as needed

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:

  • Graduate of a program in professional nursing, BSN preferred

  • Current RN licensure in the state of Iowa

  • Experience: Demonstrates competency in acute care setting. Minimum of 3 years. Demonstrates competency in emergency room or critical care area. Minimum of 2 years. OB experience preferred Demonstrate leadership skills Special Skills and Competencies: Experience with computer software and willingness to learn new software (Excel, Microsoft, electronic charting, WorkDay, etc.) Ability to work flexible hour

  • Must provide proof of Basic Life Support ( BLS Provider -American Heart Association or Professional Rescuer-American Red Cross) prior to employment or within 30 days of hire and maintains current status.

  • Must provide proof of Mandatory Reporting for Child and Dependent Adult Abuse training prior to employment or within 6 months of hire and maintain current status per State of Iowa guidelines

  • Completes Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) – American Heart Association within 6 months of hire and maintains current status.

  • Completes Pediatric Advance Life Support (PALS) – American Heart Association within 6 months of hire and maintains current status.

  • Completes Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) – American Heart Association within 6 months of hire and maintains current status.

  • Completes MANDT Training within 6 months of hire and maintains current status.

  • Completes Trauma Nurse Core Course (TNCC) within 6 months of hire and maintains current status.
