Great opportunity to join an adult-only cardiac program in beautiful Muskegon Michigan. The ideal candidate will be joining a team of 4 perfusionists, bringing the total team to 5 perfusionists covering three cardiac surgeons from the University of Michigan. Annually we perform around 400 hearts, 150 TAVRs, 300 Cell Savers, and rare ECMO initiations in a brand new, state of the art facility with 3 open heart rooms. Our cardiac caseload consists of CABGs, Valves, and various Aortic Procedures.

Position Summary:

The staff perfusionist is a highly trained member of the open-heart surgery team who is responsible for the operation of the heart-lung machine. The perfusionist employs a number of highly technical, mechanical and electronic devices, which monitor, support or replace the functions of the patient’s cardiovascular and/or pulmonary systems. The perfusionist also operates devices used for autologous blood transfusion in the operating room. The perfusionist must command extensive knowledge in human anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, pathology and surgical technique. The perfusionist must maintain all equipment and supplies at appropriate inventory levels.

What the Staff Perfusionist will need:

  • Board Certification or eligibility by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion is required.

  • Proficiency with cardiopulmonary bypass systems, intra-aortic balloon pump systems, ventricular assist and blood salvaging devices is required.

  • Ability and sill to handle organizational change and continuous quality improvement processes.

  • Ability to facilitate staff development through appropriate coaching, mentoring and counseling.

  • Well developed communication skills, both written and oral. Communicates effectively with individuals and groups representing diverse perspectives.

  • Articulates and demonstrates commitment to the philosophy, values, mission and vision of MHP.

What the Staff Perfusionist you will do:

  • Operates the heart-lung machine during surgeries requiring cardiopulmonary bypass.

  • Demonstrates safe and appropriate judgment while conducting cardiopulmonary bypass.

  • Controls anticoagulation as required for cardio-pulmonary bypass and other life support devices.

  • Administers blood, drugs and anesthetic agents upon prescription.

  • Prepares pressure-monitoring system for cardiovascular surgical patients.

  • Maintains an accurate Perfusion Record on each patient requiring cardiopulmonary bypass.

  • Prepares and operates intra-aortic balloon pump.

  • Prepares, operates and transports ventricular assist devices.

  • Prepares and operates autologous blood salvaging systems for surgical procedures.
