Position Summary: Cook includes responsibilities at multiple cook/prep stations in the kitchen. Cooks will we cross training and expected to be able to cover any station as needed. These positions are responsible for quantity food production using standard recipes according to forecasted or tallied number of servings. Modifications of general diet recipes for special diets are adhered to. Quality is controlled using batch-cooking methods and creative uses for left over foods are employed to prevent waste and increase sales. Cooked foods are prepared in a timely fashion and in sufficient quantities, in order to prevent delays in patient and cafeteria service. Food must look and taste good.

Qualifications: Able to read and write and perform basic math. Two years’ experience in institutional or commercial cooking preferred. Some lead cook experience desirable.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Maintains good rapport and cooperative relationships. Approaches conflict in a constructive manner. Helps to identify problems, offer solutions, and participates in their resolution.

  • Maintains the confidentiality of information acquired pertaining to patient, physicians, employees, and visitors to St. Joseph Mercy Chelsea/Saint Joseph Mercy Health System. Discusses patient and hospital information only among appropriate personnel in appropriately private places.

  • Maintains knowledge to perform the duties of the job. Assumes responsibility for performance of job duties in the safest possible manner, to assure personal safety and that of coworkers, and to report all preventable hazards and unsafe practices immediately to management.

  • Demonstrates self-directed learning.

  • Behaves in accordance with the Mission, Vision and Values of St. Joseph Mercy Chelsea/Saint Joseph Mercy Health System.

  • Provides quality patient care by considering the age specific, development and cultural needs through competent clinical practice. Demonstrates unit/area competencies.

  • Identifies and assists in resolution of problems related to safety, sanitation and maintenance of the environment.

  • Practices effective communication in all interactions (patient, visitor, co-worker, etc.)

  • Promotes a positive work environment by demonstrating teamwork.

  • Demonstrates knowledge in using food production equipment

  • Demonstrates a complete understanding of all departmental policies and procedures. Department orientation form completed.

  • Attends basic food safety and sanitation course.

  • Matches proper cooking method to the type of food to be cooked.

  • Arranges food attractively in steam table pans.

  • Identifies safety or sanitation problems and assists with resolution.

  • Maintains a consistent work-flow.

  • Works in collaboration with all production and service staff.

  • Reports to work as scheduled.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Skills and Abilities
