Description:

GENERAL SUMMARY AND PURPOSE:

Primary responsibilities include performing all necessary procedures pertaining to accessioning and technical preparation of all pathology and cytology specimens. This individual must function with a high degree of technical expertise regarding handling of specimens to insure accuracy of diagnoses made from specimens submitted for evaluation. Effectively and efficiently prioritizes workflow within the department. Uses the laboratory computer system and equipment.

Full-time, 40 hours/week, Day shift, every 3rd weekend rotation, and 2 holidays/year

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • High School Diploma.

  • Two years of college course work completed (40-60 credit hours) with emphasis in a science curriculum or equivalent with 12 hours Science credits preferred (must be able to provide valid transcripts).

  • Associates of Science, Applied Science (or similar) preferred.

  • One year experience working in Cytology Preparation and/ or Histology Processing preferred, with knowledge of medical terminology.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Picks up pathology specimens from various locations throughout the hospital and campus such as surgery, endoscopy, etc. Full registration for outreach specimens with orders for Surg Path, Cytology and Molecular pathlogy procedures. Includes insurance entry and verification. Responsible for proper handling, accessioning, and billing of all pathology specimens through entering data into the LIS computer application. Prints labels and work lists. Answers telephone and assists coworkers, patients, staff and pathologists as needed Demonstrates proficiency and understanding of Pathology and Cytology preparations and procedures including NONGYN's and Liquid Based PAP's, using established quality control standards to ensure patient safety. Stains and coverslips all NON-GYN, GYN, and other pathology slides utilizing proper techniques. Proper use of required laboratory equipment and performs necessary quality control and maintenance of assigned lab equipment and records. Assists with basic or designated Histology procedures. Cleans and stocks all work areas. Distributes slides and paperwork to cytotechnologists or pathologists as needed. Monitors inventory for Pathology areas. Follows policy and procedures for storage length and proper disposal of blocks, slides, surgical specimens, requisitions, and reports. Effectively and efficiently prioritizes workflow within the department. Performs other duties as assigned. Maintains good rapport and cooperative relationships. Approaches conflict in a constructive manner. Helps to identify problems, offer solutions, and participate in their resolution. Maintains the confidentiality of information acquired pertaining to patient, physicians, associates, and visitors to St. Joseph Mercy Health System. Discusses patient and hospital information only among appropriate personnel in appropriately private places. Behaves in accordance with the Mission, Vision and Values of SJMHS. Assumes responsibility for performance of job duties in the safest possible manner, to assure personal safety and that of coworkers, and to report all preventable hazards and unsafe practices immediately to management.

ADDENDUM - MICROBIOLOGY

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Analytical-Waived/Moderately Complex Testing

Perform specified waived and/or moderately complex testing and assess/investigate integrity of test results per CLIA testing personnel responsibilities. Perform, result, review and maintain quality control records and seek assistance for resolution of issues. Perform routine maintenance and troubleshooting on equipment used in performing job functions. Perform proficiency testing, per standard patient testing protocol.

Specimen Processing Tasks

Process and evaluate orders and specimens for acceptability. Maintain specimen identification and integrity through entire process. Prioritize and distribute specimens to appropriate section for analysis Prepare specimens to be sent to testing laboratory

Clerical and Service Tasks

Answer large number of telephone inquiries Fax, mail and deliver reports to appropriate location Maintain and file laboratory records and reports.

Additional Duties

Register patients and place test orders, as required Collect and receive patient samples, if required Load specimens on automated analyzer, as required. Perform culture plating techniques and reagent preparation, as required. Load specimens on automated analyzer, as required. From our CSP we also have our Microbiology media preparation and glassware washing duties
