I Accountability Objectives:

Responsible for a safe, efficient Operating Room environment for hospital employees, medical staff, and patients. Ensures compliance with administration policies and procedures as well as OR schedule planning. Executes efficient daily Operating Room schedule administration.

II Position Qualifications:

Minimum Education, Licensure / Certification and Experience Required.

A. Education

Graduate of an accredited school of nursing or equivalent.

B. Licensure / Certification

• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

• Licensed to practice nursing in the state of Michigan.

C Special Skill / Aptitudes

• Interpersonal skills necessary in order to communicate effectively with various levels of hospital personnel and physicians.

• Excellent customer service orientation skills necessary in order to deal effectively with various levels of hospital personnel, outside customers and community groups.

D. Experience

Six months to one year previous related working experience in order to acquire and effectively utilize knowledge of Operating Room practices, policies and procedures.

III Duties / Responsibilities:

1 Ensures a safe, efficient environment for operating room staff, medical staff and patients. Interprets and enforces OR schedule planning and administration of policies and procedures. Supports and interprets medical bylaws, rules, and regulations of surgical specialty services. Assigns intr-operative staff based on expertise and recommendation from specialty service coordinator, and on patient, surgeon, and procedure requirements. Schedules addition of urgent cases appropriately. Collaborates with first call anesthesiologist in assigning emergency start times. Participates in development of intra-operative patient status report for families and friends who are waiting during surgery. Attends fire, safety, infection control and disaster plan inservices. Uses established criteria to monitor quality of schedule administration and scheduling process.

2 Organizes, develops, implements and modifies schedule planning and schedule administration program based on facility goals and objectives in conjunction with the DSS. Reviews and updates scheduling policies, operational procedures and protocol. Prepares proposals for presentation to the DSS/OR Advisory with regard to policy changes in the scheduling program. Establishes quality improvement criteria for schedule planning and administration with subsequent implementation and maintenance of ongoing program.

3 Executes effective and efficient daily schedule administration. Sends for patients within time frame to ensure

a relaxed but efficient patient flow. Communicates schedule delays and changes to anesthesiology, surgeons, OR managers, nursing staff and appropriate nursing units, and establishes appropriate schedule modifications. Makes frequent OR rounds to ascertain case progression and to easily identify potential schedule changes. Controls room turnover in cooperation with service coordinators, clinical leaders and staff. Assigns lunch and break relief for intr-operative staff. Adjusts assignments for sick calls and other time off requests. Makes changes that enhance the accuracy and minimize conflict of staffing.

4 Provides effective, efficient schedule planning and administration to medical staff using operating room services. Collaborates with the Department of Anesthesia in schedule review and identification. Collaborates with charge anesthesiologist/CRNA to ensure that the schedule runs smoothly and in accordance with policies and protocols. Executes physician marketing strategies relative to scheduling operative cases. Communicates to subgroups the status of schedule start accuracy, changes and delays. Verifies accuracy and feasibility of next day's schedule. Identifies surgeon-related scheduling problems and resolves through appropriate channels. Communicates same to OR management team. Encourages communication among surgeons and nurses.

5 Maintains room utilization data. Uses established scheduling criteria data collection mechanism to prepare monthly report. Reviews scheduling policies and recommends policy changes based on utilization.

6 Supports continuing education programs for operating room staff. Modifies patient flow as necessary to allow maximum staff attendance at inservice programs. Attends inservice programs in order to maintain knowledge level of intr-operative care.

7 Encourages staff development. Communicates department goals with staff and leadership team in order to facilitate team spirit. Attends seminars to enhance knowledge base of scheduling and clinical practice.

8 Demonstrates commitment to professional growth. Maintains membership in national organizations. Organizes administration of the operating room schedule based on national and area standards.

9 Executes performance expectations for control desk, off-shift, and holding staff. Uses standards-based performance evaluation process. Meets with employees formally once a year and informally throughout the year to discuss practice changes and necessary modifications in position expectations. Delegates necessary authority and responsibility to staff, allowing them to perform within established expectations.

10 Assigns necessary staff to provide intr-operative care. Reviews staff/room utilization and specialty service coordinators' assessments of schedule needs in collaboration with OR management team, in order to establish critical mass for staffing. Collaborates with service coordinators to make daily staff assignments based on expertise physician request and the degree of experience required. Collaborates with the education/QI coordinator when assigning orients to cases. Communicates personnel concerns to DSS.

III Duties / Responsibilities:

• In accordance with unit or departmental practice, actively participates in on-going education and communication regarding revenue management.

• In accordance with unit or departmental practice, assists with tracking and monitoring of equipment assigned to the unit. Requests services for maintaining equipment as needed.

• In accordance with unit or departmental practice, proficient with the electronic health records for documentation, assessment, and care management, performing these activities concurrently with provision of care throughout the shift.
